Month of Margashirsha Came From Mrigashirsha Star

Sanskrit mr̥gáśiras (popularly spelled Margashīrsha/Mrigashira)

Devanagari: मृगशिरा)

Tamil: மிருகசிரீஷம்

Kannada: ಮೃಗಶಿರ

The 5th nakshatra or lunar mansion as used in Hindu astronomy and astrology is the constellation Orion. Its position is described in the Surya Siddhanta.

The first two charana/pada (quarters) of this nakshatra are part of Vrushabha rashi (Devanagari: वृषभ) or Taurus. The latter half of this star belong to Mithuna rashi (Devanagari: मिथुन) or Gemini (from 23°20’ Taurus to 6°40’ Gemini).

The term Mrigashira(मृगशिर) a composite of two Sanskrit words, Mriga(मृग) meaning animal/beast and Shira(शिर) meaning head or precisely, the top of the head.

The names Mrigashira(मृगशिर) and Mārgashīrsha/Mrigashīrsha(मार्गशीर्ष) are sometimes used interchangeably. Grammatically, Mārgashīrsha(मार्गशीर्ष) means "of Mrigashira" or "related to Mrigashira". Thus Mrigashira(मृगशिर) is the correct name of the star, while Mārgashīrsha(मार्गशीर्ष) is the name of the month related to Mrigashira, i.e, the month in which moon will be in conjuncture with the Mrigashira nakshatra. There is no such word as Mirgashīrsha it is a miss-pronunciation of Mārgashīrsha. In Malayalam it is called Makayeeram.
